PennDOT warns motorists not to drive across roads covered with water because the water may be deeper than it looks, and to never drive around barricades or signs on closed roads – Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

Motorists are also advised traffic signals may not be functioning due to power outages, and to use extreme caution at intersections.

Motorists can check road conditions on more than 2,900 miles of state roads by calling 511 or visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, average traffic speeds on urban interstates and access to more than 500 traffic cameras. Regional Twitter alerts are also available on the 511PA website.

PennDOT is also advising visitors entering Pennsylvania from New Jersey that the Pennsylvania Welcome Center at Delaware Water Gap is closed until further notice due to possible flooding.

State Roads Closed in East Central Pennsylvania Due to Storms

Allentown – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) advises drivers several state roads are closed in East Central Pennsylvania because of flooding and/or downed trees and power lines caused by Hurricane Irene last week and rain storms this week.

Here is the latest list of road closings in PennDOT Engineering District 5, which includes Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton and Schuylkill counties (as of 8 a.m.):

Berks County

Monocacy Creek Road between Monocacy Road and Ben Franklin Highway in Amity Township due to flooding (this week’s rain);
Mt. Laurel Road/Leesport Avenue between Willow Creek Road and Huller Lane in Ontelaunee Township due to flooding (this week’s rain).

Lehigh County

Berwick Street – Entire street.
Nescopec Street – from Broad Street to the Blacksmith Shop.

Note: All vehicles must be moved from the posted streets. Vehicles that remain on the posted streets will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. Snow removal will continue as needed, and residents will receive notice of additional streets that will be cleared. This schedule is subject to change depending on weather conditions.

SNOW EMERGENCY: A SNOW EMERGENCY HAS BEEN DECLARED IN ASHLAND, EFFECTIVE 2AM UNTIL 6AM FRIDAY MORNING. PARKING WILL BE PROHIBITED ON HOFFMAN BOULEVARD, FROM BROCK STREET TO CENTRE STREET, AND ALSO ON CENTRE STREET FROM FRONT STREET TO 23RD STREET. RESIDENTS ARE ORDERED TO MOVE THEIR CARS FROM THESE LOCATIONS BETWEEN 2AM AND 6AM. ANY VEHICLES THAT ARE NOT MOVED FROM THE ABOVE LOCATIONS WILL BE FINED $50 AND TOWED AWAY AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE.
